A Visit from Saint Nicholas by Robert Walter Weir, ca. 1837
It appears that Santa has grown both in stature and weight since the early nineteenth century.
Somehow, this seemed to be an appropriate parting shot for the silly season.

Interesting tidbit:
The picture of Santa Claus with which we are familiar today (the jolly fat man with the funny clothes and the red nose) was invented by German-American political cartoonist Thomas Nast in the 1860’s, and was based upon traditional German representations of St. Nicholas. Amazingly, Nast was also the person who first utilized the donkey to represent the Democrats and the elephant the Republicans. He is also reputed to have invented the dollar sign.
