Shrimp Farming

Cherry Shrimp

Krista has gotten me started in trying to keep shrimp. I've got a couple of varieties, red cherry shrimp and amano shrimp. Above, the picture is an adult RCS. Below, a juvenile. The juvenile is what started it all. It tagged along as a hitchiker when I bought some corydoras hastatus. Krista said: "How cute!" Next thing you know, I'm buying two more at the exorbitant price of 9$ each. One of those died today, I'm not sure if it's the one in the picture above. I found a better source, I hope, on Aquabid, where I can get them for a couple of bucks apiece.

I picked up four "algae eating shrimp" (amano I think) at the same time which are far more reclusive. The only thing I've managed to photograph is the leftover exoskeleton of one of them. It's kind of eerie, as if the shrimp decided to abandon ship out a trap-door in the top.
