Sunset Coral Platy Fry

Sunset Coral Platy Fry

Sunset Coral Platy Fry

Here are two of the three platy fry that Jeff mentioned yesterday. We first noticed them about five days ago, and they’ve been spending most of their time hiding out in the water wisteria at the bottom of the tank. Now that they’re almost too large to get eaten by their parents, they’re getting a little bolder.

I've had my fry for a couple of moths and I've been keeping them in a breeding nest. I have a bully in the tank so I'm afraid to let them out. How long does it take for fry to grow to full size?

Molly:

I have dwarf coral platies. 3 females and 1 male. I recently notice 1 small fry hding in the gravel. afraid for his survival i purchased a mulit-level breeder cage. I placed the two pregnant females and the small fry in the cage 7/21/07 PM. When I awoke 7/22/07 AM there were a couple dozen more fry! I am not sure if Platies give birth to all their babies at once, so i am uncertain how long i should leave the mother(s) in the breeder cage?

Having platy fry has become so commonplace that I don't really take that much notice of it. In response to the first (old) question, I suppose it takes about two months before they're reasonably adult in size, though they're still small. As for the second question, I have so many platys now that I don't really worry about losing them that much-- if there are hiding places, more than enough seem to survive. Our population (originally about seven) has at least tripled, perhaps quadrupled in the past six months. When the fish are big enough not to fit im the parents mouths, then would be the time to let them out.

I have noticed that if you move pregnant platys from their usual environment, they will give birth over a long span of time (perhaps weeks) because they don't feel as "safe"-- but everyone gets born eventually.
